The 1st SWOP's 'Paint-out' at Fonthill

Well, after a week of dismal, wet and grey weather, what a pleasant surprise to be greeted with bright sunshine this morning.

The weather Gods are on our side!

We met up outside the Beckford Arms. There was myself, Brian and Vivien.

A short walk and we separated to various vantage points to begin painting.

The morning soon became cloudy, with intermittent spots of rain, but nothing too heavy, thank goodness!

Brian managed a nice cloud study and an excellent piece focusing on the leaves and daisies.

Vivien completed a lovely, large canvas of the lake itself.

I managed a small piece of an old tree.

All in all, a very enjoyable few hours and roll on the next meeting!

Here are some photos of the work done:

First up is Brian, showing his juicy knife work!

2nd is Viviens', with a nice, abstract feel to it...

 Lastly, my piece...

Till the next time..... Jim

The Value of Outdoor Painting

By Emile A. Gruppe

"Despite frustrations, I always return to nature. And I remain convinced that the quickest way to learn about composition, values and colour is to work outdoors. Of course, you can work in the studio, too. You can sometimes do wonders painting from a sketch done on the spot. But if you're going to work in the studio, use sketches, not photographs. If you've been honest, even a bad outdoor sketch has something in it. But photos are always wrong. The blues are too vivid; the shadows, too dark. Everything's off. Slides are okay if you're desperate, if you can't get out and want to experiment with color or composition. They give you a place to start...but save the pictures you do from photos--and then see what you paint outdoors. Once you compare the two, I'll bet you never use photos again!"

If you zoom in, you will notice a track that leads down to the Lake. (At about 50M along from the pub, on your right, if you stand with your back to it) At the bottom is the dam. If you happen to miss us at the pub, I'm sure you will find one or two of us around about the dam.

See you there!
